about

From the time my group Christmas disbanded at the beginning of 1975 through to my arrival in Hamilton, Ontario to manage Star Records in July 1978, it was a period of great upheaval and uncertainty in my life. I had been bouncing around between Oshawa, various parts of British Columbia and Toronto for years. I had attempted a career as an actor and met with encouraging results in my first few forays on to the theatrical stage. I took training at Factory Theatre Lab, George Brown College and York University and spent most of my time hitting the pavement in search of work. I call these years the Displaced Years because I had no real direction - or home. One thing which didn't stop during this period - was songwriting. I wrote a group of songs which I still cherish. This 'album' is pure archive material. I recorded most of the songs using a Guild nylon string guitar given to me by my friend Jerry Ames. They were recorded 'live' to ghetto blaster when I lived with my girlfriend Debra Earhart on 15 Love Crescent in The Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto. One of the songs even dates back to the Christmas era. 'Garden of Eshorah / Evening in Bagdad' is a song which Christmas had jammed on but never recorded. One of the tracks ('I Can't See Me') was recorded 'live' to ghetto blaster at a gig at the long defunct Nervous Breakdown Cafe in Toronto. These are very crude recordings transferred from an ancient cassette tape but I believe the quality of the songs is discernible regardless. The bonus track is from a compilation CD called 'Love Is Everything'. A Design Hope project from 2010, produced by Christopher Clause and Amy King, it featured many artists from the Hamilton, Ontario contributing songs with a Christmas (The Season) theme. I chose to resurrect my 'Displaced Years' ditty for the project.
