This collection of demos chronicles (to quote Dustin Hoffman's character in 'Little Big Man', 'my religion period'). Written between 1986 and 2003, the songs constitute an original gospel repertoire of which I am fairly proud. There's nothing particularly cookie-cutter about the songs.

The cover photo I've chosen for this collection is also unique in that - it is taken atop Hitler's 'Eagle's Nest' at Berchtesdaden in Bavaria. The mountaintop residence built by the SS for 'der fuehrer' was rarely used because, ironically, the master of the master race was afraid of heights!! I was impressed to note that, while visiting the location, the highest point on the 'eagle's nest' was now adorned by this giant cross. It symbolized, for me, in no subtle terms - that Hitler's diabolical regime - an ultimate evil of sorts - had been overcome by ultimate good. ... more

about

Here are a series of demos plus two 'finished' tracks. The demos are all just acoustic guitar and voice and except where otherwise noted are recorded at Howie's Place (Morningstar Studios) in Dundas, Ontario in the late 80's/early 90's. They were recorded as an afterthought when we had finished the 'Theatre Like This' album there. The 'Howie's Place' demos are transferred from a cassette dub.

'Dreaming of a Merciful World' and 'Never Again (Walk With God Together)' were recorded with full band at Scott Pipe's studio (Crosscurrent Productions) in Waterford, Ontario in 2003. It was released as a pressed, limited edition CD-single.

'Following the Star' and 'Christmas Once Again' are from a series of demo's I did in the early 2000's at Studio J in Hamilton, Ontario. I called those sessions 'The Hangdog Sessions' because I was sick as a dog.

All the songs are older. They were written during the period from 1985 to 2003 when I was involved in full-time Christian ministry. Many were written to sing for street people and those incarcerated in prisons. From 1985 to 1987 I was a full-time Bible student. From 1987 to 2003 I was ordained as a full-time pastor. 7 of those years as a Youth Pastor and 8 as a Senior Pastor. I retired from pastoring in November, 2003.

The photo was taken at Hitler's Eagle's Nest. Berchtesgaden, Bavaria. It struck me as high irony that at the top of Hitler's 'lair', now the Cross of Christ was erected at the highest point - symbolizing the triumph of good over evil to me.
